More about how to become a member of FCPC. 1/1 MEMBERSHIP Y ou are invited to become a part of our family of faith and to join in what God is doing through our congregation's ministries. The only requirement to join is belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. BECOMING A MEMBER If you have discerned that you wish to become a member of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, we invite you to take the following next steps. LUNCH WITH THE PASTORS A few times a year, the Membership Committee hosts Lunch with the Pastors, a casual and relaxed gathering for newcomers to learn more about the ministry and mission of our church, get to know the pastors and other newcomers, and learn about church membership. MEET WITH A PASTOR Before you join, the pastors are available to walk alongside you. Reach out to a pastor if you have pressing questions or would like to talk together about your decision to become a church member. FILL OUT A MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION Complete the online application to request church membership. The Session, our governing body, is required to approve all memberships. This application formalizes the process and allows for record-keeping. OFFICIALLY BECOME A MEMBER IN WORSHIP You may join by transfer (moving your membership from another church), reaffirmation of faith, or profession of faith (with baptism if you’ve never been baptized). The pastors will talk with you about these methods and setting a date for joining. SOME FAQ'S Do I have to be baptized to join the church? All members of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church are baptized Christians. If you are not baptized, you may become a member through baptism and profession of faith. If you have already been baptized, you may join our church family by transferring your membership, reaffirming your faith, or professing your faith publicly for the first time. More about Baptism at FCPC . Do I join when I get confirmed? Yes. Youth who participate in confirmation classes have the opportunity to decide whether to profess their faith publicly and become a full church member. If a confirmand hasn’t been baptized, baptism happens during the confirmation liturgy. To learn more about confirmation classes at FCPC, contact a pastor. What do you offer for children? We love kids, and we have a vibrant, healthy children's ministry that strives to nurture children and their families to live a life of Christian faith. We believe it is one of the most important things we do as a community of faith, and we take our promises to kids very seriously. Children who join our church with their families are technically not official members until they profess their faith publicly and personally, which happens during confirmation. If you have questions about our Children's Ministries , please contact Barbara Patterson . WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP? Contact Office Manager Sarah Hays for more information. • Who We Are | Pittsburgh, PA | Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church

Our history and the ministries we started at FCPC. 1/1 WHO WE ARE Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church is a community of faith that has a rich tradition, vital new ministries, and an enduring legacy of mission outreach. OUR PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE The Rev. Bickford Lang, upon becoming the first pastor of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, wrote these words as a preface to the Purpose and Charter of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church in 1953: “Let us have a church that dares imitate the heroism of Jesus; seek inspiration as He sought it; act on the present like Him; pray as He prayed; work as He wrought; live as He lived." In the early 1950s, a group of families living in the Fox Chapel area began to worship together at Shadyside Academy. They became some of the 339 charter members of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, which was officially organized in October of 1953. Two months later, the chapel was built on the corner of Fox Chapel Rd. and Field Club Rd., and worship services started to be held on the site of the present church. The church facility has grown to include a Christian Education building, a Fellowship Hall, and the Sanctuary, which was completed in 1964. In recent history, the congregation engaged in a program of mission support and extension of facilities, including new Christian Education classrooms, an Atrium, Memorial Garden and Columbarium. For more than sixty years, the members, leaders and pastors of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church have continued in the tradition expressed by its first pastor. Thousands of men, women, and children, past and present, have made up this particular family of faith, and the tradition of Christ-centered ministry in the Fox Chapel area has become an enduring legacy. Accordingly, congregations should elect persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders are so named not because they “lord it over” the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life. Ruling elders, together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships. When elected by the congregation, they shall serve faithfully as members of the session. - G 2.0301 Book of Order 2017-2019: The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
